Our automatic mosquito misting systems are the closest you can get to total mosquito control

With the wet spring and early summer we’ve had, the mosquitoes are out in full force. Mosquito Squad of Columbia’s motto is “fight the bite” and we have many ways we go about doing so. Our barrier spray program is highly effective at eliminating mosquitoes and ticks. Another effective treatment method is our misting systems which provide the ultimate in mosquito protection.

Depending on your situation, an automatic misting system may be an excellent choice for your mosquito control needs based on providing total control. The system works by emitting a fine mist around a designated area for mosquito elimination. Nozzles for the spray can be installed on fence lines or around the perimeter of the home to protect the entire yard. Alternatively, nozzles may also be fitted to parts of your outdoor living areas. Each nozzle is attached to tubing that leads to the system’s product supply. As programmed, the fine mist is automatically released providing you with the protection your family needs. Easily adjustable, you can choose how many times your yard is misted each day which is typically between two two four times. The system also has a remote control allowing you to opt for additional or fewer sprays to suit your needs. The misting system component consists of inconspicuous nylon tubing that connects strategically placed, corrosion-resistant nickel-plated stainless-steel nozzles. The best part is that the unit is automatically filled, serviced and winterized by Mosquito Squad of Columbia so you never need to lift a finger.

Columbia SC misting systems

One of our mosquito misting systems set up in a residential application.

Mosquito Squad of Columbia’s misting systems are used in residential, light commercial, and barn installations. We have the ability to customize our product dependent on the pest we are going after in your individual situation. We set the misting systems to spray during the times when the mosquitoes are most active which is generally dusk until dawn. Our misting systems are also a favorite among horse owners and are widely used in horse stable settings to control both flies, horse flies and mosquitoes.

Columbia, SC mosquito control for horse barns

Protect your family, your horses and your investment from flies, mosquitoes and mosquito born illness with automatic mosquito misting systems.

For horse owners and enthusiasts our automatic misting systems pack a punch by controlling mosquitoes that could potentially infect your beloved equine with Eastern Equine Encephalitis and also protecting them from nagging flies. When we install our systems for use in barn settings we install one spray head per 12 foot stall. These are set to disperse at variable times throughout the day for maximum control. Unlike the residential application which primarily targets mosquitoes and is set to disperse during the dusk to dawn hours, our barn misting systems primarily target flies which are more active during the day. Our special formula is designed so that flies cannot develop resistance thereby rendering the treatment ineffective.  Resistance to fly sprays is a major concern for horse owners because flies can evolve so quickly so that your fly control will no longer be effective.

Some of these diseases include West Nile Virus, Encephalitis,  Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease.

Mosquito Squad of Columbia teaches us that all mosquito treatments aren’t created equal!

Mosquito on spring flowers

The abundance of rain will ensure plentiful blooms and mosquitoes this season.

With all the recent rain we’ve had in the Columbia area, the mosquito season is likely to be a doozy this season. Standing water is everywhere which means the mosquitoes are using that pooled water to lay millions and millions of eggs. With the probability of a booming mosquito season, it’s important to keep you and your family protected from these backyard menaces and the many illnesses they carry. In choosing the right mosquito professional to take care of your mosquito control needs, it is important to choose someone who is experienced in getting the job done right the first time.

I am sure you have seen the advertisements around town offering mosquito control. Many of these companies don’t even specialize in mosquito control and most only offer a “knock down” treatment rather than a residual product that truly protects. Knock down treatments mean that the product is only effective on the mosquitoes that are present in the yard at the time of treatment. Knock down treatments are all most of these companies use, that is why many customers have been left with a bad taste in their mouth and lots of bites on their bodies. The knock-down treatment is very inexpensive compared to the residual product but, you get what you pay for. Many Columbia residents feel that this is the only type of control available in the area. Mosquito Squad of Columbia is here to tell you that you can have a mosquito and tick free yard all summer with our duo of knock down protection and timed release extended treatment.

Not all mosquito treatments are created equal

We are raising the bar here in the Columbia area when it comes to mosquito control and we have the competition running scared. They know our product works, and theirs just scratches the surface at controlling mosquitoes. We use a proprietary treatment that includes three different products to deliver the ultimate effectiveness.  We not only offer different levels of protection, we also offer many specialty treatments. We are specialists in outdoor pests. While other companies only offer a general pest management approach, we offer many different options that target the pests you are having problems with. Flying pests are much more difficult to control than crawling pests. Don’t ever let a company tell you there is no difference in the two, or there is nothing effective at targeting them both. At Mosquito Squad, that’s what we do.

Mosquito Squad of Columbia doesn't give mosquitoes or ticks a biting chance

Mosquito Squad of Columbia doesn’t give mosquitoes and other nuisance insects a biting chance!

Full protection throughout the summer:

If you talk to a professional who has knowledge about products used to eliminate mosquitoes, the knowledgeable ones will tell you it will wear off after about three weeks.  Our competitors spray every 4 weeks which guarantees their customers will be unhappy 25% of the time.

Our regular barrier spray program is scheduled every 3 weeks for optimal results. Not only will the treatments eliminate existing mosquitoes and ticks in your backyard upon application, they will also create a veil of protection designed to keep more mosquitoes from entering your treated property until the next treatment. Our customers can also choose our platinum service with service every 14 days for the ultimate protection. If you come across a landscape or lawn service and they say they take care of mosquito control, beware. Their product most likely does not have the residual performance and the licenses usually held by landscape and lawn companies restrict them from spraying decks, patios, porches, home siding or structures. At Mosquito Squad of Columbia, we have the licenses to treat your structures as well as your yard.

Mosquito Squad of Columbia offers natural treatment programs that are garlic or mint based. Natural products have less residual protection than their contemporaries and need to be applied on a two-week schedule in order to gain the most effectiveness.

If you aren’t satisfied with any facet of the results you receive from our product, we re-spray at no charge. It is that simple. We always make sure our customers are taken care of, that is why Mosquito Squad of Columbia has so many repeat customers, because once you find out what works and who you can trust, that is the company you stick with. Along with our safe and highly effective pest control programs we also offer mosquito misting systems. Don’t just take our word for it. What do heartworms have to do with mosquitoes?

Keep your pampered pooch happy and healthy with mosquito and flea control from Mosquito Squad of Columbia. Let the good times roll!

Among all the diseases that can strike our beloved pets, heartworms are one of the most fatal and hardest to treat.  Dogs, cats, ferrets and other mammals are susceptible to heartworm disease.  Heartworms are caused by the bite of an infected mosquito and there is no way to tell which mosquitoes are infected. The bottom line is if you have a pet and you have mosquitoes, then if not treated your pets will almost surely get heartworms. It’s just that simple.

Even though heartworms are treatable, the treatment can be really rough on your pet and is not 100% guaranteed to eradicate the heartworms. In some cases the treatment can prove to as fatal as the disease itself. Thankfully, heartworms can be prevented, through education, keeping your pet on a regular routine of heartworm preventative medication and by using mosquito prevention practices such as having your property treated by a licensed professional to keep mosquitoes out of the areas where your pets frequent.

You many assume that having your beloved pets on heartworm preventative is enough to dismiss the threat of heartworm disease in your pet, but it is not. Though highly effective, as with any medication, the preventative is not 100% effective.  A good friend of mine had this happen to my beloved childhood dog, a black Lab named Lola. Even though she kept up with her heartworm pills each month, Lola still contracted heartworm disease. I am an advocate in educating pet owners on total prevention at the source to greatly reduce the risk of another beloved pet contracting heartworm disease.

heartworm-life-cycle in dogs

This simple diagram shows the life cycle of the heartworm in a dog.

In the same way that it is important to regularly inspect your property to keep you and your family safe from pesky mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, it is also important to check the areas your pet frequents to ensure they are free of standing water or containers that can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Any debris, brush or trash should be cleaned up. In addition, any containers or reservoirs for standing water. Tip it over, turn it over or throw it away. Have your property treated by a licensed professional to kill and prevent mosquitoes. These easy to follow steps, combined with regular visits to your veterinarian and keeping your pet on year-round  heartworm preventative is the key to keeping your pet heartworm free.

Other Worrisome Worms

Heartworms are not the only worms that can plague your pet.  Dogs, cats and even horses can develop other parasites and worms from more than the mosquito. Fleas are a major cause of concern to pet owners and non-pet owners alike. Along with causing Anemia, Flea Allergy Dermatitis and a myriad of other skin conditions in your pet, fleas are also responsible for Tapeworms.

The ugly truth : a dogs heart infected with heartworms.

Tapeworms are caused by fleas when the tapeworm uses the flea as an intermediate host in its own life cycle. Eggs are deposited by the adult tapeworm within the environment and are then consumed by the flea larvae. If your pet then ingests an adult flea that has consumed tapeworm eggs when in the larval stage, the tapeworms are passed on to your pet. Dogs, cats, equine and other pets ingest the tapeworm ridden fleas by biting at skin where the flea is biting. Believe it or not, people too can become infected with tapeworms if they accidentally ingest an infected flea. Tapeworms are treated through de-worming medications, but until you eradicate the flea problem itself, the vicious cycle can replay over and over again within your pets flea infested environment like a bad movie. Killing and preventing fleas is the key to keeping these nasty pests out of the picture for good.

Prevention of fleas is easy. There is a wide array of topical and pills on the market for flea prevention on your pet. These take care of the problem on your pet, however the pets living quarters will also have to be treated properly and this includes the yard or outside areas that your pet frequents. Most fleas are picked up within the yard  from wild animals or neighbors pets and it is crucial to keep your property flea free to prevent re-infestation. Having your property treated by a licensed professional is the best defense against fleas.

Mosquito Squad of Columbia takes the tiger (mosquito) by the tail

Asian tiger on leaf

The Asian tiger mosquito displays similar markings to its namesake, the tiger.

The Asian Tiger mosquito ( Aedes albopictus), also known as the  forest day mosquito, made its debut into North America in 1985 by hitching a ride in a shipment of used tires from Asia bound for the port of Houston, TX. Since that fateful day the Asian tiger mosquito has been moving its way across the United States rapidly and can now be found as far up our East coast as Maine.

Named for its similarities in coloration to its namesake, the Asian Tiger mosquito has bold black and white stripes on its legs as well as its body. The similarities to the tiger don’t stop there. This mosquito is said to also be very aggressive at feeding time as well. What makes the Asian Tiger so unique is the way in which it feeds. There are over 3,500 species of named mosquitoes throughout the world, most of these species typically like to feed from dusk until dawn. The Asian tiger mosquito however, is what is called a “day feeder”, meaning that it will feed anytime throughout the day with little regard for the presence of humidity or heat. This species is well-acclimated to tropical and sub-tropical regions and is steadily gaining resistance to some of the cooler climates found here in North America. As this invasive species moves into more regions of the U.S., it is continuously evolving to accommodate its ever-changing environment. Its feeding is more aggressive and many cite that the Tiger’s bite is more painful.

Asian-MosquitoOne of the reasons behind the Asian Tiger’s aggressive feeding habits quite possibly lies in its persistence. All female mosquitoes must ingest blood for proper development of their eggs.  This  particular mosquito will return to feed off of its victim to get it’s fill of blood even once it is swatted away. The Asian also feeds off a variety of mammals which leads to cross pathogens that can contribute to the transference of certain mosquito-borne diseases and illnesses. The Asian Tiger mosquito is a known vector of  West Nile, Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever, Encephalitis and Heartworms in pets – all of which have been reported in the Midlands of South Carolina.

This mosquito, along with being one of the most bloodthirsty of its class, is also known to be a master at laying its eggs in some of the smallest crevices in miniscule amounts of water including gutters, holes and crevices in trees, dense foliage and brush that may hold moisture and even in our trash and litter. A single soda bottle cap can become a nursery to hundreds of mosquito larvae. Anything that can hold or pool water within your landscape and around your home can serve as a place for a female mosquito to lay her eggs. It is of the utmost importance to inspect your surroundings on a regular basis and turn over, tip over or throw out anything that can aid in the mosquitoes reproductive process. Mosquito Squad calls this the five T’s of mosquito prevention.

  • Tip
  • Toss
  • Turn
  • Remove Tarps and tires
  • Treat

Following this formula will  prevent mosquitoes from biting you and your family and pets, and to reduce the risk of contracting a mosquito-borne illness or disease.

Dread Skeeter Vows to “Fight the Bite” in Midlands

Super hero Dread Skeeter recently spotted in downtown Columbia.

More than 80 eye witnesses report seeing Dread Skeeter, mascot for Mosquito Squad of Columbia, at this week’s Historic Columbia Foundation’s Gardening Symposium.  Considered a super hero by many who despise mosquitoes, fleas, biting insects and the misery they spread, Dread has dedicated his life to the eradication of mosquitoes, ticks and other disease-carrying pests with his mosquito repellent barrier sprays and misting systems.  Many symposium attendees shared their stories of biting insect infestations with Dread, who promised to meet with each one of them individually to determine the best strategy to help them “Fight the Bite”.

When asked what motivates him to do this work, Dread stated “My life’s mission is to kill mosquitoes and ticks. I don’t kill because I hate. I kill because I love.   I love kids. I love pets.  And I know that mosquitoes and ticks carry diseases that hurt kids and pets (and adults too).”

Dread awarded Free Barrier Sprays to three lucky winners, then big farewell to all, with promises to appear next week at the Home Builders’ Association Carolina Classic Home and Garden Show March 12, 13 and 14, 2010, at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds.  At that event, Dread will once again be offering Free Barrier Sprays to several lucky winners, and looks forward to discussing how he and his Mosquito Squad team can help you control biting insects at home, at your business, or at your outdoor wedding or special event.
